Organizing Your Home

While some home-organization gurus will tell you to start in the kitchen, I’m going to advise beginning in another area. The kitchen will be the third place we attack and this doesn’t make it less important, but I will explain why I’m starting elsewhere.

First, if you look around your home, you probably see lots of clothes. Am I right? You’ve got clothes in closets, you’ve got clothes in piles (meaning to put them away and not having time, eventually just pulling them out of the pile and wearing them), and you’ve got clothes in laundry baskets. You might even have rumpled clothes in the dryer or (heaven forbid!) the washer. If it’s the former, the clothes are only rumpled. If it’s the latter, they’re probably rumpled AND smelly and (potentially) mildew-y. Yuck! Somewhere in this Mt. Vesuvius of laundry, dirty, clean, or otherwise, is your home. And I’m guessing that if you have a laundry room, you keep the door closed, as there are multiple Mt. Vesuvii piling up in there. If you don’t have a laundry room but have a laundry closet (with room for the washer, dryer, and some shelves), I’m betting you haven’t seen the top of your dryer for weeks or even months. It’s covered in rumpled clothes and towels, right?

Have you guessed where we’re starting? That’s right! The laundry area of your home. And here’s why: if you get your laundry room cleaned and organized, you’ll be much more apt to actually DO the laundry that plagues you and helps your home to be disorganized. And because you won’t want to undo the work you’ve done in the laundry room, you’re more likely to fold the laundry when it’s done, and put it away. There’s something that’s a breath of fresh air about a straightened laundry room—sort of like when you walk in to a closet where everything is hanging neatly.

So start with small steps:

Can you see the floor? No? Then pick up what’s on the floor and put it in laundry baskets. If you don’t have enough laundry baskets to accomplish this, then just sort the things in to piles outside the laundry room. I make piles of light clothes, whites, darks, and towels/rags.

Can you see the top of the dryer? If not, put the excess clothes in the aforementioned piles. Grab one rag to dust and have two plastic grocery bags—one to collect junk, and the other for later. Dust the dryer from the lint-leftovers and use a little window-cleaner if it doesn’t come off readily. Don’t neglect the area where the “start” button is—that can be grimy, too!

Can you see the top of the washer? If not, repeat the steps in #2, using the window cleaner if necessary.

Okay - now you’ve got your washer & dryer cleaned off. Congratulations! Let’s continue to take small steps in the laundry room….

Now take a critical look at your supply-shelf. Do you have empty bottles or boxes lying around from spent detergent and/or fabric softener? Clean those out. Use that grocery bag that you’ve put excess dryer lint in and pitch those empties. Then organize what’s left. If you need to add things to your shopping list, now is the time— now you know what you’ve got and what you need to buy. When you organize your supplies, I recommend putting the detergent and any liquid softener above the (gasp!) washer. Make it easy to reach. Put the dryer sheets over the dryer—why reach more than you have to? If your shelves are higher than you’d like, use the top ledge of your washer & dryer to hold supplies! I’ve never seen a washer and dryer that don’t butt up to a wall for the electrical plugs they need. So use that space to your advantage. Put the detergent box or bottle on the top of the washer, along with whatever other washing supplementals you have. Put the dryer sheets on the top of the dryer so you don’t forget and end up with a load of static cling!

If you have wire-shelves above your washer & dryer, you’ve got a built-in place to hang a trash bag. Use that extra grocery-sack and cut one of the handles in half. Then tie those two ends around some of the wire-shelf and use the bag to collect dryer lint and empty containers from your emptied laundry supplies. When it’s full, cut it down and put it in the trash and put up a new one.

Now look at your floor. Does it need sweeping? If so, grab a broom and sweep. It won’t take you more than 5 minutes and you’ll feel much better about your room and your work—especially if something you’ve just washed falls on the floor as you’re transferring stuff to the dryer.

Congratulations! You’ve done the preliminary work of organizing your home—you won the battle in your laundry room! Take a 15 minute break and enjoy this victory. Then start the task of doing the excess laundry that you’ve been collecting—one pile at a time. When the first is done, swap it out immediately to your dryer or to hangers, if that’s more appropriate. Take it one pile at a time—in other words, small steps! Soon, you’ll find that it really only takes 5-10 minutes to fold warm clothes from the dryer and put them in laundry baskets, ready to transfer to the appropriate rooms, closets, and drawers. The rewards are huge here—keep up on it (one load every day) and you’ll win the war against the Mt. Vesuvius of clothes in your home.

How To Market Yourself To Potential Employers

How to Sell Yourself to Employers

Your job hunting tactics mould the kind of work you are getting.

It takes more than being at the right place, at the right time; marketing yourself is something you should prepare for. Employers will only hire you if you are able to communicate your knowledge and skills. Developing and utilizing your marketing flair is, therefore, important to land you the job you dream of!

You are a Product

And because you are one, you need to pack yourself in a saleable image. It is important that you present yourself in a pleasant way. Start with your resume. Don’t hand in unpolished personal data. Is it updated? Does it respond to the job ad? Customize your resume according to the needs of the vacancy. Your cover letter should also be in ‘mailable’ form meaning that it should not tolerate nor accommodate typos. Especially don’t misspell your employer’s name! Then when you step into a room of a panel of interviewers, make sure you look agreeable and ready to do business. Remember what they say, “First impression lasts” and with job interviews, that interview day may be your only time to convince them you are worth it. So, do your best.

You are more than a Package

Consumers barely buy something just because it looks pretty. They often want to know “what’s in it for them?”. When you go out there and market yourself to employers, you follow the same concept and tell them what you can do for them. They won’t hire you for nothing. They always want something back commensurate to if not more than what they are paying you. Applicants sometimes fail the interview by asking so much about what the company can do for them. Remember they’re the ones you have to convince to buy you and not the other way around. So, don’t go bragging and making them feel they owe you a favor by letting you come here to waste your time for a little chitchat.

Your Sales Spiel

There is no such thing as too much advertisement. If you want that job that bad, then go your way to get it. Yet, there are some pointers that you might want to take to heart to make your spiel right. Avoid being overconfident or too talkative during your interview. Nobody wants a blabbermouth. Know the company and the open position well and tailor fit your answers to the traits needed in the position. If you know these information, it’s easier to persuade them that you are a perfect fit for the job. You are in to impress them by making them find the qualities they need in you. However, don’t lie. Recruiters do reference checks so, make your spiel impressive but honest.

Make them Come Back for More

Only a few interviews end leaving employers a good impression. End yours with one. After you have emphasized the skills that you can offer, let them know you are interested. Good advertisements on television always leave the customer remembering about a good line that was said. It may be serious or funny but it leaves them thinking about it. If you can close your discussion like a bomb, they are most likely to get back to you a day or two later.

15 Tips To Lose 10 Pounds Or More

There was a time in this world when the need to lose weight was completely unheard of. People ate well, but the worked well too. They woke up early in the morning and then engaged in a whole day’s work. This work was mostly physical labor. People worked on fields digging, sowing, harvesting. They tilled they soil, rode horses, worked on farms and ranches. The result was that they could afford to eat almost anything they wanted in whatever quantities they wanted. But that was ages ago. The world has changed so much since those days. Life styles have changed so much and the comforts and facilities have increased so much.

But every rose has its thorn. As a result of all these comforts and amenities the state of physical well being has really changed. Most of us have sedentary jobs that demand little or no exercise at all. To put it simply, things have become so damn easy. And just as can be expected, weight gain has become a major concern for almost every city dweller.

During the period of thoughtless youth it is not such a major concern. The young practically eat nothing and so weight problems do not bother them so much. But as soon as you turn twenty, you start showing signs of weight gain and that too in all the wrong places.

It’s not about the hour glass figure or the perfectly sculpted and toned body. It is more about staying fit and remaining healthy to ensure a long, disease free life. Every body knows that those extra pounds spell illness. All over the world people are switching to a healthier life style and the catch line is indeed weight loss.

There is only one thing that you have to bear in mind. Weight loss does not happen by itself. There are only two ways to accomplish it… The first is by watching what you eat and the second is by seeing to it that your body gets the exercise that it needs.

As you read this post, my hope is that you’re continually amazed by all the “everyday” things you can be doing to lose 10 pounds…or more. Simple effective ways that can help you shed all the unwanted pounds in no time…

15 Tips To Lose 10 Pounds Or More

Drink plenty of water. Our body needs a lot of water so give in to water. Water is not just way to flush out toxin but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter. This it self will discourage any tendency to gorge. The best thing about water is that is has no calories at all.

Stay away from sweetened bottle drinks, especially sodas. Hey all those colas and fizzy drinks are sweetened with sugar and sugar means calories. The more you can cut out on these sweetened bottle drinks, the better for you. So if you must drink sodas, then stick to diet sodas.

Eat fresh fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice is often sweetened but fresh fruits have natural sugars. When you eat fruit, you are taking in a lot of fiber, which is needed by the body, and fruits of course are an excellent source of vitamins.

Increase your fiber intake. Like I mentioned, the body needs a lot of fiber. So try to include in your diet as many fruits and vegetables as you can.

Eat intelligently. The difference between man and beast is that we are driven by intelligence while beasts are driven by instinct. Don’t just eat something because you feel like eating it. Ask your self whether your body really needs it.

Go easy on tea and coffee. Tea and coffee are harmless by themselves. It’s when you add the cream and sugar that they become fattening. Did you know that having a cup of tea or coffee that has cream and at least two cubes of sugar is as bad as having a big piece of rich chocolate cake?

Do not skip meals. The worst thing you can do while watching you diet is skip a meal. It has just the opposite effect of what you want. You need to have at least four regular meals every day.

Fresh vegetables are better than cooked or canned vegetables. Try to eat your vegetables raw. When you cook them, you are in fact taking away nearly half the vitamins in them. And canned vegetables too are processed and are not nearly half as good as fresh vegetables. When you buy your vegetables it would be a good thing to see if the label says that it is pesticide free.

Choose a variety of foods from all food groups every day. This is a fine way of keeping deficiency diseases at bay. Change the items included in your diet every day. This is an excellent way of keeping deficiency diseases at bay and it helps you to experiment with a variety of dishes and there by you do not get bored of your diet.

Try to have breakfast within one hour of waking. It’s always best to have breakfast within an hour of waking so that your body can charge itself with the energy it needs for the day. The idea is not to wait for your self to get really hungry. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day but that does not mean that it should be the most filling meal of the day.

Go ahead eat cheat food, but only for flavor. There are many things which you have to avoid from your diet but which you may have an undying craving for. Do not avoid them altogether. You could call them cheat foods and indulge in them once in a while. But take care just to tingle your taste buds, don’t hog on them. Instead of that share them with others.

Watch your fat intake. Each fat gram contains 9 calories so by reading the total calories on a food and knowing the quantity of fat, you can estimate the % of fat, which should in no way exceed 30% of the food.

Instead of frying things try baking them without fat. Baking or BBQ’ing is by far a healthier method of preparing food than frying. BBQ’ing requires lesser oil or fat.

Avoid crash diets. They are bad for health and you will gain what you have lost once you take a break. Crash diets are not a solution to weight loss. It might seem as if you have lost few pounds but the moment you give up on the crash diet every thing will bounce back with a vengeance. Take a look at it in this way. Do you think that it is possible for a person to survive on a crash diet for the rest of his or her life? Certainly not! So at some time or the other, you will have to give up the crash diet and then you will see for yourself that a crash diet does more harm than good on the long run. Crash diets may have a lot to promise, but very rarely do these promises ring true. Crash diets are things people go on in order to wear an old dress or suit for a particular occasion. That’s the only purpose that they serve as far as I can see.

God gave us teeth for a reason… Therefore we should develop a habit of chewing all food including liquid food and soft foods like sweets, ice creams at least 8 to 12 times. This is essential to add saliva to the food, as it is only in the saliva that sugar is digested. Often we find that whatever goes into our mouth goes down like lightning. We hardly give the saliva any time to act on the food. So does digestion take place like it should? Do we just stuff our tummies with food that doesn’t get digested or in other words that doesn’t yield the benefits that it should? Exercise out doors as far as possible. There are two advantages of doing whatever you are doing out side. One advantage is that it gives your body a chance to get a lot of the much needed fresh air and sunshine. The second advantage is that the surroundings keep you perked up and it is a break form remaining cooped up all day long

Volunteering

You have valuable things to offer other people. Even if you feel as though you have absolutely nothing to contribute to society, there is undoubtedly something you can do in a volunteer capacity. Can you read? You might volunteer to read to children at a story hour in the local library. Can you talk? You can volunteer to visit an elderly person in their home once a week and simply have a nice chat. Can you pick up trash? There are plenty of volunteer organizations with the main goal of beautifying local parks. Just think of all the great things you can do, with very little effort, which will make a huge difference in someone’s life. Find something that you love to do and then start doing it as a volunteer. There are volunteer positions for just about anything you’re willing to do. Children’s hospitals have volunteers who go around to the different rooms and sing babies to sleep. Local government offices take in volunteers to greet people at information booths and direct people to the right offices. Schools have volunteer bus riders who make sure the kids are all under control for the duration of the bus ride. There is no limit to the good things you can do as a volunteer in your community.

Helping others just feels good.
You might be having the lousiest of days, but then you go and volunteer to help with a party for disadvantaged kids in your community; seeing their eyes light up and hearing their squeals of delight will surely erase any melancholy feelings you have about the first part of your day. Sometimes, when you know you are doing something good for someone without asking for anything in return, it can be an absolute rush. You will feel better about yourself knowing that you are doing something that is changing someone’s life in a positive way.

Volunteering can lead to new professional opportunities.
When you are typing up a résumé in hopes of landing a new job, you can put any sort of experience on there to include volunteer experience. You may have never worked in an office setting professionally, but if you have spent a few months volunteering at an office you can list all the skills you learned there when applying for a paying job. Oftentimes, monotonous tasks are assigned to volunteers such as filing, answering phones, and opening mail. These are the exact skills, however, that potential employers might be seeking out. Another aspect to take into consideration is that sometimes a volunteer position will turn into a paid position for the right person. For example, you might be volunteering as administrative help for a local non-profit organization, when suddenly there is room in the organization’s budget for the position to be a paid one. Or maybe the leaders of an organization recognize your hard work as a volunteer and offer you a paying job. Not all people volunteer with the hopes of getting hired into a permanent position, but it is a wonderful way to learn new skills while also giving something back to the community.

You will make society a better place
. Not only can volunteering make your life better, it is also to the benefit to the society you live in, for if there were no volunteers picking up trash in the park, who would do it? If there were no volunteers helping out disadvantaged youth, who would help these kids stay out of trouble? Volunteers do what they do without expecting pay in return; therefore the local government does not need to fill the gaps with paid positions. This keeps taxes low. Volunteers also help people who would otherwise be out causing mischief within society, so this keeps crime levels low in the community. When you volunteer your time and talents, you aren’t simply getting a great feeling and helping yourself learn new skills, but you are helping everyone in your local area and beyond. Now that’s a great feeling.

Why Work From Home?

WHY WORK AT HOME?
Why do people work at home? If you poll them (and that has been done, so there is no
need for you to start canvassing the neighborhood), you will find that a variety of factors
allow people to move from time clocks to self-reliance Let’s take a look at a handful of
popular reasons for pursuing a work at home career.

OPPORTUNITY
If the idea of working at home is appealing, you might just be an opportunity junkie.
Many of us crave the chance to do great things and find that our traditional nine to five
work environments are very limiting.

Women may have a glass ceiling with which to contend, but all of us have another even
harder ceiling to break through right above that one. It’s the inevitable ceiling of being
an employee instead of a business owner.
No matter how hard you work, no matter how smart you are, the structure of a traditional
job and the limitations inherent in your role as one of the hive’s worker bees will limit
you.

You might become a boss some day, but you will never become The Boss. The
opportunity just isn’t there.
Even if there is enough opportunity to entice you to continue making the daily commute
to the office for awhile, chances are those real chances for fulfillment are doled out
arbitrarily and unfairly.

The shots you do get to move up the ladder or closer to your goals are few, far between,
and inevitably mishandled by someone who outranks you.
Operating your own business from home restores opportunity. Any limits on your
success or growth are within your own control.

If you want to do something, there is no head office to clear it. You don’t have to fill out
a requisition form if you want to invest in yourself. You don’t need to smile during
evaluation week so that your middle manager with the happy face obsession will give
you a great performance review.

Opportunity is everywhere. When you have your own home business, the only limits are
the one’s you place upon yourself.

MONEY
Many of those who are break from the herd and work from home do so because of the
prospect of greater earnings. Along with the aforementioned opportunity in a general
sense comes the chance to make more dough.
Many work at home successes earn so much more than they ever would have if they
continued on their prior path that it boggles the mind.

If you get a halfway decent job that you can stay at for decades and you are a good
employee, you will probably find a way to make a decent living by popular standards.
Your income will allow you to buy a home, keep your lawnmower blades sharpened and
to occasionally take a family vacation. Two cars and a chicken in the pot are not things
at which one should sneer, either. They beat a worn pair of shoes and a “will work for
food” sign be a significant margin.

In the end, though, those in the regular workplace have a cap on their earnings. That
cap may not be expressed in any contract or the result of any hard and fast law, but it is
very real. The very factors that limit opportunity in general will also limit earning
capacity.

By stepping outside the employee circle and into the world of running your own
business, you can destroy that cap.
If having a chance to make big money is important to you, running your own operation is
definitely appealing.

FLEXIBILITY
The fact that you work nine to five, Monday through Friday, might not be that distressing
to you. Until your kid’s softball team makes it to the state tournament and plays their
Thursday semi-final game at six in a city two hours away.
The fact that you only have five vacation days per year until you have been with the firm
for more than two full years may make perfect sense for a company, but that provides
little comfort when you finally meet the woman of your dreams and she wants to take
you on a romantic, two-week tropical cruise. You get the idea.

Those who work from home have the ultimate in flexibility. They really can set their own
hours the way very few employees can. Some work early. Others work late. Some work
only a few hours a week, but for long hours on those days. Others work as necessary.
It depends on the home business. However, the home business is within the control of
its boss, and if she wants to take mid-afternoon naps or if he wants to spend
Wednesdays at the driving range, there is nobody one step higher on the corporate
ladder to tell her or him “no.”

FAMILY
Every morning someone drops off his or her child at daycare, gets back in the car and
starts to do the math in his or her head.
Their daycare provider has the kid from eight until five-thirty, five days a week. That’s
forty seven and a half hours per week.
The parent has the child from about six a.m. until eight and then again from five-thirty
until that eight o’clock bedtime. That’s twenty two and a half hours per week. Even if
one gives himself or herself full credit for two full weekend days of “awake time,” the
total is still only at fifty two and a half hours per week.
That’s right, the child only sees his or her parent for about five more hours per week
than he does his daycare provider.
For many parents, that just isn’t tolerable. In fact, it’s heart-wrenching and it’s one of the
chief reasons why many are inspired to start their own work at home business.
Yes, it may be tough to seal big deals with a two year old trying to stick a Crayola up
your nose, but that challenge is far more palatable than the idea of a child growing up
with only slightly more contact with his or her parents than his or her babysitter.
Even those who don’t have children may be interested in the familial advantages offered
by stay at home work. Spouses can see more of each other. Those who are
accustomed to being forced to do business on the road can finally enjoy a husband or
wife again.
Working at home puts one in the midst of family as powerfully as regular jobs can
separate one from his or her home life.

INTERESTS
Many people feel trapped doing jobs they despise. You can see it in their faces. From
the angst-ridden barista at any one of ten local Starbucks who could be making shrewd
stock deals all day to the slow-moving housepainter who always wanted to be a chef,
you encounter people who are working outside of their interests and skills just to collect
a check.

Some people learn to compromise. They take solace in Mr. Holland’s Opus and
convince themselves that eventually all of that compromise will add up to something
meaningful. They shove their interests and true desires to the back of their mind and try
to retain focus on doing their job.

Yes, a few people are lucky enough to find employment that really matches their skill
levels and attitudes nicely, but many more spend their time doing things in which they
have only a marginal interest outside of the bi-weekly paycheck their efforts produce.
Though some will swallow the disappointment and frustration, those who decide to work
at home will not. They opt to pursue their dreams and to find ways to make their skills
and their “calling” into action.

It can be far more fulfilling than simply working for the sake of earning a salary. It
imbues one’s vocational life with great meaning and appeal.

Every year, thousands escape the rat race. They shed jobs that limit their potential and satisfaction. They find fulfillment in their work and unprecedented financial rewards. No more commutes. No more annoying supervisors. No more dead end jobs. They operate their own businesses from the comfort of their own home. Will you join them?

New Mothers Survival Guide

You did it: you made it through the pregnancy and now you have your beautiful baby. What now? Unless you are fortunate enough to have wise relatives and friends living nearby who are willing and able to guide you through your first year with a baby, you may spend a good portion of your time feeling as though you really don’t know what you are doing. On the other hand, sometimes having people near you who want to give you advice can actually make things harder to deal with.

NO, YOU’RE NOT CRAZY
You may be one of the very few women who take to new motherhood with absolutely no problems. Maybe you are right back to filling your freezer with meals you made lovingly by hand and figure out how to knit while nursing your
baby and singing lullabies. Then there are the rest of us. It is a bizarre right of passage among most new mothers to truly feel as though you have lost your mind. Many new mothers go through a period of time when they feel as though there cannot be another mother out there who feels as exhausted, as overwhelmed, and as inept as they do. The truth is that most moms spend a good portion of the first year second guessing themselves and feeling just a little bit crazy. The important thing to remember is that these feelings eventually do fade away as you get more and more comfortable with your role as a mother. Soon enough, the fun you have with your baby will outweigh the stressful moments.

ACKNOWLEDGE THE PHYSICAL CHANGES
Your hormones need time to adjust, and not just a couple of days. Your body changes a lot when you are pregnant. Sustaining a baby inside of you takes a lot of different hormone surges, which you probably aren’t used to. It takes some time to get everything back to normal, and although it may be frustrating sometimes, the only thing that will help you is waiting. You have to let all the wild hormone surges work themselves out of your system, and unless you are ready to go on medication to regulate your moods, then you get to play the waiting game. So if you find yourself sobbing when the dinner you cooked doesn’t turn out well, or crying hysterically when a sad commercial is on television, then just relax and realize that someday you will probably laugh about how wacky you felt post-partum.

Until then, try to cut yourself some slack and not be surprised by your emotions. As long as you aren’t going over the deep end – such as having trouble caring for yourself or the baby, or having thoughts of hurting yourself or the baby – then everything you are feeling is probably normal. Just think of it as riding an interesting roller coaster, which you will eventually be able to get off of…just not quite yet. You need some rest. You’ll be told to get rest right after you have your baby, but what about in the months following that initial post-partum period? Here is a fact about the first year of raising a baby: it is exhausting. You don’t get to get the sleep you used to get, you are up until all hours of the evening when the baby is ill, and you are still trying to physically recover from the stress of having a baby for many months after the actual labor. You’ll hear this time and time again from other mothers: nap when the baby naps.

You may laugh and respond that the baby’s nap time is the only time you have to yourself, or maybe that it is the only time you have to get anything done. Here it is again, so pay attention: nap when the baby naps. In the beginning, your baby’s naps will probably seem erratic and unpredictable, but a few months into it you may notice that there is a pattern to the baby’s napping. Your baby will probably take anywhere from one nap to many naps throughout the day, so do your best to indulge in at least one nap at some point while your baby is snoozing. It’s just easier to deal with things when you get enough rest, but since you probably aren’t getting a full night’s sleep, then you have to grab sleep when the opportunity arises.

If that means catchinga small cat nap at two o’clock in the afternoon, so be it. It’s better than spending your day stumbling around like a sleep-deprived zombie and then passing out of sheer exhaustion when the baby finally does go to sleep for the night. You need rest…there is just no getting around it. You may be surprised at the change in your body. Most women have an interesting story about how their bodies changed after having babies. You may hear women talk about developing certain allergies after the birth of their babies, for example.

Or perhaps you will hear a story from a woman about how she used to have migraines but then after the birth of her baby she never experienced another headache. Changes to the body after pregnancy can be both good and bad, but they are usually interesting. Why should having a baby change a woman’s allergies or tendencies toward headaches? Doctors will offer various explanations, but the best explanation is this: It just does. If you find that you have perplexing changes to your body after the birth of your baby, then take solace in the fact that you aren’t alone.

Alert your doctor of any alarming changes to your body, but you need to recognize that some changes just don’t go away. In other words, some changes during pregnancy and after the delivery are permanent, even after your baby has headed off to college. Hopefully, any changes you experience are for the best, but if you find that your body just isn’t what it used to be before you had babies, then you have just joined the ranks of many, many women all over the world. You truly are not the only mom going through this.

When you see other you feel as though it is more of an ordeal than anything else. What you may notrealize is that these women have their bad days too, and they probably spend a good portion of their time feeling as though they have no idea what is going on just like you do. Don’t feel as though you are the only new mom who feels as though you don’t know what to do from moment to moment. In the first year of your baby’s life you will inevitably feel inept, confused, and bewildered. Being a mom is truly a job that you learn as you go and learn from your mistakes.

Whenever you catch yourself feeling as though you are the only new mom who doesn’t know how to properly roll up a diaper, or how to suction out your baby’s nose, or how to clip your baby’s toenails, just understand that everyone has to learn sometime, and your time is now. Instead of feeling helpless, try to empower yourself to learn things as you go and become the kind of mom who isn’t afraid of anything. Does your baby have a splinter in her finger? No problem; grab the tweezers. Is the swing broken? No big deal; grab a screwdriver. You will feel much better about your skills as a mother when you jump right in and just do it regardless of your fears and apprehensions attached to tackling things that aren’t familiar to you.

GET YOUR BODY BACK
Take it easy on the exercise initially. You may be really gung-ho to get your pre-pregnancy body shape back, but in the beginning you need to recognize that you are still recovering from having your baby. If you overdo it, you might wind up stifling your recovery or really hurting yourself. You should plan your exercise regimen around what your activity level was prior to getting pregnant, and also relative to how much exercise you got during the pregnancy as well.

For example, if you ran marathons before getting pregnant and continued light jogs on the treadmill all the way up to your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, then it seems completely reasonable that you might start attending aerobics classes once your doctor gives you the green light to work out. On the other hand, if you considered a light walk around the block to be all the exercise you needed before you got pregnant and then avoided any form of exercise whatsoever during your pregnancy, you are going to need to ease into an exercise routine carefully. Sometimes it’s difficult to take your time with something like this because there may be an urgency you feel about losing weight.

Just know that taking it at a reasonable pace will ultimately help you lose the weight in a way that will allow you to make a permanent change. The alternative it is to do it too quickly and too dramatically and then wind up eventually gaining it all back and then some. You’re not going to spoil your milk if you work out. You may have heard this one before: if you work out too hard while you are nursing, you’re going to spoil the milk that is in your breasts and make it sour. Many nursing moms have used this as an excuse to not get exercise in the first year after their baby is born. Here is the truth: unless you are exercising in excess, your breast milk will be just fine.

There is no danger of moderate exercise having an effect on the taste of your milk or on the amount of milk you produce. So if the only reason you haven’t been heading to the gym a few times a week is because you are afraid your exercise will mess with the milk you give to your baby, then you can stop worrying. If anything, getting some exercise may help with your milk production since regular exercise can help you stay relaxed. Being in a relaxed state is one of the best things you can do to make sure that your milk flows freely. If you are happy and not entirely stressed out – something that exercise can help you achieve – your milk production should be more than enough.

If you still have concerns about what exercise can do to your milk production, you should have a chat with your doctor or a lactation consultant. They should be able to ease your fears. Don’t allow yourself to slump around. You already know that raising a baby in the first year is tough and at times can border on torturous. The benefits to being a mom certainly outweigh all the tough times you will have, but when you are tired, grumpy, and a little overwhelmed, your first instinct may be to fall into a pattern of inactivity. Don’t do it!

Too often, you hear stories about moms who have “let themselves go” and the next thing they know they turn around and they are a hundred pounds overweight. Your first year as a mom is a crucial time when you form habits that will probably stick with you for a long time to come. Now is the time to get into the habit of making time for some physical activity every day. In the first year there is no need to overexert yourself in an attempt to build a habitual exercise habit.

Instead, aim for something simple, like a nightly walk around the neighborhood with your baby or doing an aerobics DVD a few nights a week. If you are able to get into the pattern of doing these things then you will probably eventually find yourself upping the intensity of your workouts. Years from now, you will be very grateful to yourself that you had the foresight to start exercising in the first year after your baby was born. You owe it to yourself to get into this habit early on, because it will help you to avoid a common problem among moms to let themselves gain weight and become inactive. If you aren’t going to do it for yourself, do it for your baby. You will be able to keep up with your child much easier as the years go by if you are physically fit. You won’t be nearly as much fun if you don’t even have the energy to run around the playground with your child.
